Shared care arrangements for ADHD medication in Mearns Medical Centre

We are often asked to prescribe medication for ADHD, following an assessment with a private (non-NHS) specialist service.

There are certain regulations we adhere to regarding this, as set out by local guidelines.

We consider the medications commonly used to treat ADHD as being restricted to initiation by adult or child psychiatrists who specialise in this field. As a practice, we generally agree to the ongoing prescribing of such medication after initiation, where appropriate monitoring is being undertaken by the specialist team. We regret we are unable to agree to prescribe medication for ADHD recommended in the private sector, where that request has not originated from an adult or child psychiatry doctor.
